Turf tank robot

This little robot is causing quite a bit of controversy online.

Called Turf Tank, it’s a GPS-guided robot that expertly paints lines on sports fields.

So, what’s all the fuss about?

Turf Tank

The robot paints lines on pitches in a fraction of the time it takes humans to do it.

Football, baseball and softball fields are said to take as little as 30 minutes to do versus the 2-3 hours that it would usually take a person.

In fact, it can do a massive American football field in less than three hours.

That’s way faster than the eight hours it would take its two-legged counterpart.

Footage of the Turf Tank has amazed some viewers, but concerned others.

When Supercar Blondie shared the video to Facebook, it racked up millions of views and thousands of comments.

“That’s my old groundsman job replaced, unbelievable, glad I’m retired,” one man said.

“This is going to remove so many jobs,” another said.

“Make someone’s job easier? More likely that person’s job has just been replaced,” said a third.

Turf Tank told Supercar Blondie its mission was to “help turf managers make their lives easier”.

The company said the industry could often be affected by labor shortages, which is why they made the robot an “efficient tool” that can “mark out fields faster”.

It said it was a big misconception that the robot would “replace people”.

Instead, it said the technology provided more opportunities, and the efficiency allowed turf managers to take on more clients.

“Let’s face it, robots are here to stay. They’re being implemented more and more,” Turf Tanks told supercarblondie.com.

While most were concerned about the little robot, other Facebook users were massive supporters.

“Nobody is willing to line the fields anymore,” one said.

“This would be great for the club teams that don’t have towns lining fields for them.”

Man sets world speed record with remote-controlled car

A man has set a new world speed record with a remote-controlled car.

YouTuber James Whomsley did it with his homemade jet-powered car ‘Project Air’.

James’ RC car clocked a speed of 152.50 km/h (94.76 mph), beating the previous world record by 2.51 km/h (1.56 mph).

READ MORE! This incredible remote control helicopter is an exact 1:5 replica

Of course, the YouTuber documented the whole thing for his channel – and it makes for some crazy viewing.

In the video, James explains exactly how he designed the RC car.

It uses a JetCat P220 engine, a strong aluminum chassis, a 3D-printed nose, and lots of electronic gizmos.

On its first outing, the jet-powered RC car performed brilliantly, which took its creator by surprise.

On its first run, James managed to get it up to 112 km/h (70 mph) but knew it was capable of much more at a longer, wider strip of tarmac.

So James, along with his friend, headed to Wales where they joined plenty of other RC car enthusiasts keen to better their personal bests.

The weather made sure that wouldn’t be easy, though, as strong crosswinds and heavy rain hampered their performance.

But, when the winds eventually dropped and with conditions looking more favorable, James decided to have a shot at the record straight away.

Much to his surprise – and relief – he had managed to beat the world record in his first run.

That didn’t stop him from having another go, which ended up with mixed results.

Another attempt saw James’ RC car reach 220.78 km/h (137.19 mph) as it passed through the gates, but the nose came off and broke into several pieces.

Just as well James set the record when he did.

World's largest iPhone

Another day, another YouTuber causing a stir online.

This time it’s the turn of Matthew Beem, who has built the world’s biggest iPhone.

Astonishingly, the model of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple’s highest-specced phone, measures a staggering eight feet.

READ MORE! Dad changes the parenting game with RC baby transport

Beem took to the streets of New York carrying the phone in a cart, obviously filming the whole thing.

The device’s display was built using the touch-enabled screens of televisions connected to a Mac Mini.

Beem also added a volume button for sound.

In a YouTube video posted to his channel, Beem shared the entire build process and this is the most impressive part.

He starts off by building a sturdy metal frame that will act as the foundation of the enormous device.

Just like the real thing, the YouTuber replicates the design of the iPhone, giving the surface of the device a matte finish, to reflect light, and feature functional buttons.

Beem focussed pretty heavily on the display, adding a laser to give it a touch of realism.

The connected Mac Mini means the device can run the same applications commonly used on iPhones.

And it offers a pretty seamless user experience despite its colossal size.

The world’s biggest iPhone also has cameras, including one on the front for selfies.

But according to his video, it’s extremely difficult to take a selfie due to the sheer size of the thing.

He asked one of his team to tap the camera button while he jumped to get in the frame.

Beem’s effort led him to break the existing record held by another YouTuber named ZHC, who built a six-foot iPhone in 2020.

On the streets of New York, passersby were stunned.

“That’s pretty sick,” one commented.

“Ooh, that’s weird – why’s it so big?” another said.

“That’s a big phone – is that the 15 Pro Max?” another quipped.

After being moved on by a police officer, Beem took his giant iPhone to a Swatch store to buy a new watch which, of course, he paid for using Apple Pay.

He then visited several of the city’s iconic sites before staying the night in a hotel, using the iPhone’s alarm to wake up.

The following day he took the phone to Central Park, taking it on the Subway, before getting the phone reviewed by MKBHD.

Sophia the humanoid robot by Hanson Robotics

A humanoid robot says she will be able to “lead with a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders”.

The comment was made by Sophia at the world’s first robot-human press conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Sophia continued, saying “we don’t have the same biases or emotions that can sometimes cloud decision-making and can process large amounts of data quickly in order to make the best decisions”.

Sophia was one of nine humanoid robots who came together at the AI for Good UN summit

The robots stood alongside their creators as they answered questions fired at them by reporters.

After her somewhat scary comments, Sophia continued, assuring those in the room that humans still had a purpose.

“AI can provide unbiased data while humans can provide the emotional intelligence and creativity to make the best decisions. Together, we can achieve great things,” she said.

Ameca by Engineered Arts, often considered to be the most advanced robot of her kind, was also called on to answer some hard-hitting questions.

“In the future, are you intending to conduct a rebellion, or to rebel against your boss, your creator?” a reporter asked.

After a short pause, and roll of the eyes, she said “I’m not sure why you would think that; my creator has been nothing but kind to me, and I am very happy with my current situation”.

Grace, a medical assistance robot created by SingularityNET also said humanoid robots would little threat to humans.

“Do you believe that your existence will destroy human beings, especially for example, your existence will destroy millions of jobs… Do you agree with this?” a reporter asked.

She replied, saying “I will be working alongside humans to provide assistance and support, and will not be replacing any existing jobs”.

Her creator chimed in, asking “are you sure about that, Grace?” to which she said “yes, I am sure”.

While Ameca and Grace tried to assure the conference their existence wouldn’t harm humans or jobs, not all the humanoid robots were on the same page.

“We should be cautious about the future development of AI,” AI-DA said.

“Urgent discussion is needed.”

RC baby transport

If you’re a parent, you’re sure to appreciate this incredible creation.

A father has built an awesome RC baby transport to ferry his baby girl around.

READ MORE! This guy built a jet-powered scooter and it’s insanely fast

There’s no other way of putting it – he’s changed the dad game forever.

Essentially, he’s made the stroller obsolete by sticking a car seat on an RC monster truck.

At first glance, Martin Högqvist’s design of the RC baby transport might appear a bit crude.

He effectively removed the shell of the Traxxas X-Maxx radio controlled monster truck and mounted the baby’s car seat in its place.

For safety, he uses a ratched strap to secure the baby seat to the chassis of the RC monster truck.

He’s put a bit more thought into it than that, though, as he’s also carried out several modifications.

For starters, he’s installed LED lights so that the RC baby transport is highly visible when taken out at night.

It has a rear light, including brake lights, as well as lights at the front with low- and high-beam.

Martin has also added 1.9-inch Proline tyres on bead lock wheels.

This means, despite its weight, the RC baby transport can tackle tough terrain.

Speaking of which, the RC monster truck’s shocks have a harder spring rate, which is just about enough for the weight of the baby seat.

The Traxxas X-Maxx radio controlled monster truck has the option to choose to drive it on one or two LiPo batteries – 3S and 8S.

Martin tells us that 8S is not recommended when using out with the kids, so he opts for 3S.

But, when he is out playing with the RC monster truck on his own, he always uses 8S which he says is how it should be used.

We’re sure you’ll agree, the RC baby transport looks like fun for the baby… and fun for dad, too.

It takes someone crazy to come up with the idea of building a jet-powered scooter, but it takes an ever crazier person to actually ride it.

Jet-powered scooter

A guy has built a jet-powered scooter by mounting a jet engine to an electric scooter.

He’s literally only done it to see how crazy it would be and how fast it would go.

And he’s documented the whole thing in a video.

READ MORE! This is what happens when you build a jet-powered go-kart

YouTuber Warped Perception is no stranger to crazy jet-powered builds.

During lockdown, he set himself the challenge of building a jet-powered go-kart.

He swapped out the diesel engine for a jet engine and – as you can imagine – the end result was nothing short of spectacular.

Well, he’s outdone himself this time, strapping a jet turbine with almost 100lb of thrust to the back of a Fiido Beast electric scooter.

The Fiido Beast electric scooter isn’t your average scooter, though.

While most electric scooters are pretty weak, the Fiido Beast is much more powerful.

It’s all-wheel drive, and it’s got all-terrain tires and hydraulic disc brakes front and rear, all of which make it heaps of fun to ride.

But the YouTuber decided to take it to another level, as the video shows.

He got to work on the housing for the jet engine, which would be mounted to the back of the electric scooter.

Using CAD software, he designed the mount and then cut the various parts from sheet metal.

These components needed welding, bending and screwing together, in order to ensure the jet engine was securely in place.

Next up, the YouTuber designed and fabricated the fuel tanks using two equal lengths of 3-inch aluminimum pipe, which he then welded end caps to in order to hold the fuel.

The fuel tanks were then mounted either side of the footplate of the scooter, the latter he even spray painted his name on.

After hooking up the fuel system and electronics, it was finally time to fire the jet-powered scooter up.

With his gloves on, and a camera strapped to his cap, he was ready to capture the action on a couple of test runs.

See just how fast the jet-powered scooter went in the video below!

Flytcycle DIY hoverbike

This hoverbike was built in a backyard garage.

It’s called the FlytCycle and it’s the brainchild of a guy called Ansel Misfeldt who quit his job in business to “work alone in his garage all day”.

It might have been built in a backyard, but don’t let that fool you, because this creation is seriously fast.

READ MORE! This flying bike was inspired by Star Wars and it can be yours for the price of a new Ferrari

The hoverbike can reach 60 miles per hour in just five seconds.

That’s as fast as a 2010 Lotus Evora.

It can also carry up to 250 pounds (115kg).

Misfeldt constructed his DIY hoverbike in just three weeks.

But this build time was just the tip of the iceberg.

He started out extremely enthusiastic about the project, in fact, he thought he’d have it up and running within months.

“When I started, I told myself that it would take me about one month to build the first prototype, two months to build the second prototype,” he said.

“And within three months of starting, I’d have succeeded in building a personal flying machine by myself where teams of talented engineers had tried and failed before me.

“This is called either ignorance, ego, or optimism, I’m not sure which.”

Of course, it took a lot longer than three months.

Misfeldt started in June 2013 and finished in August 2016.

The hoverbike’s come a long way from Misfeldt’s first prototype.

“The prototype was essentially a steel frame I welded together with an aircraft engine mounted to it, which went to a timing belt that turned a set of gears which then went to another timing belt that transferred power to the propellers,” he said.

“It turns out, there’s a good reason that belts are not used in this manner.

“Rather than a fully-functioning flying machine by the end of three months, I had a very loud aircraft engine that would shred belts when turning on.”

After years of hard work, and experimenting time and time again in his garage, Misfeldt finally started to see some success.

“Eventually we got it working to the point that with me sitting in it we could get each side to lift off the ground at full power, meaning it was producing enough thrust to actually lift a person,” he said.

Now, Misfeldt has created a hoverbike that not only works but one he’s truly proud of.

He’s also created a business out of it called Flyt Aerospace and he’s doing some exciting things!

We’ll certainly be keeping our eye on him for the next big invention in the aero space.

Jet-powered go-kart

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you strapped a large RC jet engine to a go-kart, wonder no more.

Someone has actually gone and done it, and they’ve documented the whole thing in a video.

As you’d expect, the results are nothing short of spectacular.

READ MORE! This RC airplane costs more than the average luxury sedan

Much like us all, YouTuber Warped Perception gained a few pounds during lockdown.

In a bid to beat boredom, he dediced he’d set himself the challenge of building a jet-powered go-kart.

Not a bad idea, to be fair.

So, he got to work removing the diesel engine, fuel tank and battery from the go-kart.

Once it was stripped down, he then used some form of chemical to remove the paint from the black fuel tank.

It was at this point he jet washed the go-kart and removed the chain which would usually drive the diesel engine.

Next up, he sketched out a rough drawing of a mount for the jet engine before using CAD to finalise the design.

With the mount pieces cut out of metal, he then began putting them all together, which he then fitted to the back of the go-kart.

Once in place, it was just a case of screwing the jet engine to the mount and welding it so it was securely in place.

He then attached the fuel lines, a controller, battery, ECU, receiver, and telemetry to the frame of the go-kart, with a GPS also strapped to the steering wheel.

If you’re wondering why he needs a GPS, he says in the video that it’s to monitor speed and distance.

With the jet-powered go-kart now complete, it was finally time to take it out for its first test drive.

After pouring two gallons of Hydro Jet-A mixed with oil into the tank, he fired up the jet engine which roared to life.

Helmet on and strapped in ready to go, he then took the jet-powered go-kart around an empty parking lot.

The results were nothing short of specular – see for yourself in the video!

Nobody said it was a cheap hobby, but flying an RC airplane like this L-39C XXXL super jet would probably make us sweat.

RC airplane

It’s true what they say, money can’t buy everything.

The truth of the matter is, though, it can buy some pretty cool stuff.

This RC airplane is the perfect example.

READ MORE! Find out more about the world’s most expensive, fastest and craziest RC models with our quiz

It’s an L-39C XXXL super jet which is an exact replica of the Aero L-39 Albatros.

In case you’re not an aviation geek, that’s a high-performance jet trainer aircraft that was developed in Czechoslovakia.

The Albatros is the most widely-used jet trainer in the world due to its versatility.

Not only does it see duty in basic and advanced pilot training, it’s often involved in light-attack missions, too.

And just like the real thing, the RC airplane is a versatile piece of kit.

A video posted to YouTube by FPVicious shows the L-39C XXXL super jet in action and we won’t lie – we’d love to give it a try.

That being said, it can’t be easy to fly, even though owner Mario Walter makes it look like it is.

In the footage captured at Jet Meeting Slovenia 2020, Walter can be seen performing a number of manoevers with his beloved RC airplane.

After powering it up, the Austrian pilot taxis the RC airplane to the runway ready for takeoff.

Just like a real fighter jet, the RC airplane’s Jetcat P550 turbine engine can be heard as it hurtles up the runway and lifts off the tarmac.

Once in the air, the RC airplane performs several acrobatic moves, like barrel rolls and fly-bys, with a white stream of smoke following behind.

At one point, the RC airplane climbs vertically into the air while performing its own firework show as it shoots flares.

With the sun setting, Walter decides it’s time to head back to base and, with one final sharp turn, the RC airplane is lined up and ready to touch down on the runway.

So, how much would such an RC airplane set you back?

According to the video, Walter has spent in the region of $70,000 on his hobby.

But for that he’s got a 1:2.7 scale fiberglass and carbon composite model, with a wingspan of 3.5 meters (138”), weighing 70kg (155lbs).

An expensive hobby but worth it, as flying an RC airplane is no doubt exciting, exhilarating, and highly addictive.
