Rockstar Games has officially confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 is in “active development”.
It’s also now being prioritised ahead of other projects the game developer was working on.
While Rockstar was planning to remaster the original Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto IV, those plans have been axed.

Speaking with Upcomer, a “reputable Rockstar Games insider” broke the news.
They also confirmed this means the developer is only now putting all its eggs in the Grand Theft Auto 6 basket.
The reason for this is reportedly due to the poor reception its most recent game remaster received.
The company dropped Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition back in November 2021, and everyone seemingly hated it.
It is a remastered version of the GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas instalments of the game.
On Metacritic, it has an average score of 54/100 from critics, and a shocking 0.9/10 from 4141 user reviews.
That indicates “overwhelming dislike”. Ouch.
Back in February 2022, the company published a blog post that confirmed “development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.”
However, it’s likely production began quite some time ago; Rockstar’s last big release was Red Dead Redemption II back in 2018.
Currently, it’s anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 will arrive in 2024 or 2025, but the news of Rockstar now going all in on development could bring it forward.
The most recent version of the game, Grand Theft Auto V and its Online counterpart are still cash-cows for the developer.
That’s despite GTA V launching all the way back in 2013.
